What is a prompter?

A prompter is a device that electronically displays scripts or lines on a monitor and is used in a wide range of situations such as political press conferences, shareholders’ meetings, speeches, concerts, and video shoots. It serves the role of a “cue card” (a kind of “cheat sheet”) to support delivery and program flow.
Many people have seen on TV a prime minister or governor using what looks like a transparent panel during a press conference. In the U.S., presidential speeches using this stylish device have also been broadcast in Japan, drawing attention—today, prompters are used not only in formal settings but in many kinds of productions.

Speech prompters for speeches

Primarily used for speech situations such as corporate press conferences, new product announcements, shareholders’ meetings, and lectures. One unit is placed on each side of the podium, allowing speakers to read the script while scanning the audience. They are also used for U.S. presidential speeches and press conferences at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Camera prompters for filming
(teleprompters)

Primarily used for video production. By placing a camera behind the black cloth (hood), the speaker can read the script projected on the prompter while maintaining direct eye contact with the camera. They are often used for filming CEO statements, political interviews and election broadcasts, and by announcers when reading news.
